Swift Recovery, No Exams Missed: Horizon’s Back Pain Success Story

At Horizon ICU & Hospital, every patient’s journey is important to us. One inspiring story is that of a 17-year-old student who faced debilitating back pain just as he was preparing for one of the most critical academic milestones of his life.

Thanks to timely diagnosis, expert medical care, and the unwavering support of our team, he was able to recover from a slipped disc, without missing his exams. This case reflects our commitment to precision-driven care, personal attention, and empowering our patients to return to their daily lives with confidence.

A Young Life Disrupted

In September, a 12th standard student arrived at Horizon ICU & Hospital, seeking relief from severe lower back pain that had persisted for over six months. The pain, radiating down his left leg, was significantly impacting his daily routine, making it difficult for him to sit comfortably, concentrate, and study effectively during a crucial period of his academic journey: board exam preparation.

An MRI scan revealed a spinal disc protrusion — specifically, an L5-S1 disc herniation, which was compressing nerves and causing persistent pain. This type of back pain in teens, especially during academic stress, can greatly affect physical and mental well-being.

Minimally Invasive Relief for Exam Success

Given his condition and the academic pressure of board exams, the medical team decided on a conservative and non-surgical treatment. A Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injection (TFESI) a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure — was performed.

This approach is particularly effective for treating back pain, offering pain relief without compromising time or requiring prolonged hospitalisation.

The result?

Immediate and sustained relief, allowing him to prepare for and attend his exams pain-free and fully focused.

A Setback, Then a Strong Comeback

Post-exams, the student resumed strenuous physical activity, leading to a worsening of symptoms. A follow-up MRI in March 2025 showed a more severe L5-S1 disc herniation, with increased pain and limited mobility. This return of the disc issue indicated the need for a higher level of clinical intervention.

The medical orthopaedics and pain clinic team then recommended a Minimally Invasive Endoscopic Discectomy, an advanced surgical method designed for faster recovery and minimal tissue damage. The procedure was successful.

Within 24 hours post-surgery, his pain was significantly reduced. Within just ten days, he was back to a healthy, active routine — free from pain and fully prepared to move forward.
